Isha Upanishad- MIRA

Track Running Introduction to Isha Upanishad

What is the importance of the Upanishads? Why do we need to study them at all? There are two reasons; firstly, the Upanishads are ranked as the highest and best literature of India, right from earliest times to the present day. As Indians we ought to know the best literature of India. Secondly, they are records of knowledge. They have greater clarity than the Vedas, since their language is less symbolic than that of the Vedas. This knowledge is necessary for all times, but particularly for our times and the modern man. It is indispensable not only for us but for the whole world. We will not be able to take the next step in the history of the world without this knowledge. Out of total number of 108 Upanishads, twelve are regarded to be extremely important. Of these twelve, Isha Upanishad is the most important and perhaps the most difficult. It contains the summary of all the Upanishads. If we know Isha Upanishad, we will know the main line of Upanishadic teachings. Since Isha Upanishad is the last chapter of the Yajurveda, we will also know something of the Veda by knowing this Upanishad. Isha Upanishad has eighteen verses which are in the form of poetry. It is considered to be superb poetry, considering the metre, rhythm, arrangement of words, style, and substance. To judge any poetry, we have to ask three questions. First, what is the substance of it? Second, whether the style of that poetry is appropriate to the substance. There should be harmony between the substance and the style. The third is the rhythm which should be of the highest value. When substance, style and rhythm, all are of supreme nature, then that poetry is of the highest order. Considering all these three, we can say that the poetry of Isha Upanishad is superb.
