Auroville was founded on 28 February 1968 with the declaration of the Charter announced by The Mother which, inter alia, underlined the aims of unending education, bridging the past and the future, and promoting material and spiritual researches for a living embodiment of an actual human unity.

The world of today presents a bright aspect on account of great scientific and technological advancement. Communication and transportation have developed to such great heights that the world has shrunk and even countries and continents have begun to look like provinces of one globe. There are also prospects that if humanity could arrive at a new cooperative spirit, drudgery and poverty can be eliminated and life could be lived on this earth with continuous progression towards higher and higher levels of prosperity. In this great task, all of us and young people, in particular, can play a decisive role.

May I begin by congratulating all the students and scholars who have received their awards, their certificates and the prizes. It is customary to mark this occasion with a ceremony as also a few words of greetings and reflections that may serve as counsel for the future. In this way, Convocation makes an imprint of a landmark in the lives of all the participants. May I wish that this landmark continues to serve as a reservoir from which you will constantly derive inspiration for a noble and fruitful life.

India of today is being viewed from many points of view. According to some, India will be a developed country by 2020, and we have already a vision book on this theme by the former President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Kalam.

This is an occasion for greetings and congratulations. Greetings to all the members of the Inner Wheel who are gathered here; congratulations to the distinguished leaders and to the chairperson who has been elected for the District.
